Directions for use
An exceptional artisanal creation, your Diptyque candle deserves the utmost care.
Here are a few tips to optimize its lifespan and to help you enjoy it safely.
Prepare your space
- Place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
- Protect delicate materials such as wood or marble with a stand or tray.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
Light the candle
- We recommend lighting your candle with a match to avoid any risk of burning yourself.
- During the first burn, make sure to let the candle burn until a uniform pool of melted wax has formed (about 4 hours depending on the scent). This prevents the wax from tunneling and allows the wick to absorb the wax properly, ensuring an even burn thereafter. Wicks may produce a small amount of smoke when first lit.
While burning
- Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time after the first burn.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Do not move a burning or unlit hot candle.
- Keep it away from draft.
- Leave at least 10 cm (4 inches) between two candles.
After each use
- Snuff out the flame: use a snuffer to avoid splashing hot wax.
- Re-center the wick once the candle is out.
- Before relighting your candle, use a wick trimmer to trim the wick (ideal length: 3 to 5 mm) to avoid risk of fire.
Final note
- Stop using your candle once there is only 5 mm of wax left or the metal wick sustainer base becomes visible.
After care & storage
- We recommend airing out the room after burning a candle.
- Allow the wax to cool completely before moving your candle.
- Store it in a dry, temperate place (15 °C–25 °C / 59 °F–77 °F), away from direct sunlight to avoid discoloration, pigmentation or dislodge of the wax.
Story & Savoir-Faire
The bohemian neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, 1963. Guided by a desire to share their olfactory memories, Yves Coueslant, Christiane Gautrot, and Desmond Knox-Leet created Diptyque's first three scented candles: Aubépine (Hawthorn), Cannelle (Cinnamon) and Thé (Tea).
The three founders' fascination with nature gave rise to an exceptional herbarium of scents comprising more than fifty candles. Flowers, fruits, trees, herbs and spices make up this living collection.
The result of exceptional craftsmanship, the art of perfumery meets candle-making expertise. Each candle is made from a blend of several types of wax and a high-quality fragrance concentrate, as well as a selection of a wick that guarantee perfect scent diffusion and combustion. Meticulous work carried out in two factories, near Paris and in Provence, by master candle makers.

Beauty in the gesture

Making scented candles is a craft that demands time and an intimate knowledge of their materials – wax, wick and fragrance. This expertise has been built up and mastered by the Maison over more than 60 years.
It all depends on the size of the room you wish to fragrance and the desired intensity.

A handcrafted creation of exceptional quality, your Diptyque candle deserves the utmost care. Here are some tips to optimise its lifespan and enjoy it safely.
Prepare the space
- Place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
- Protect delicate materials such as wood or marble with a base or a tray.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and animals.
Lighting the candle
- We recommend lighting your candle with a match to avoid any risk of burns.
- On first use, make sure to let the candle burn until its entire surface is liquid:
About 2 hours for miniature candles (35g), depending on the fragrance
About 4 hours for small candles (70g), classic candles (190g), medium candles (300g), large candles (600g) and very large candles (1.5kg)
About 5 hours for Les Mondes de Diptyque candles
This prevents tunnelling and allows the wick to soak up the wax properly, ensuring even burning afterwards. The wick may emit a slight smoke on first lighting.
While burning
- After the first use, do not let the candle burn for more than:
2 hours at a time for miniature candles (35g)
4 hours at a time for small candles (70g), classic candles (190g), medium candles (300g), large candles (600g) and very large candles (1.5kg)
5 hours at a time for Les Mondes de Diptyque candles
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Do not move a burning or still-hot candle.
- Keep it away from draughts.
- Leave at least 10 cm (4 inches) between two candles.
After each use
- Extinguish the flame: use a snuffer to avoid splattering hot wax.
- Re-centre the wick(s) once the candle is extinguished.
- Before relighting your candle, use a wick trimmer to cut the wick(s) (ideal length: 3 to 5 mm) to avoid any risk of fire.
End of use
- Stop using your candle when only 5 mm of wax remains or when the metal wick holder becomes visible. Care and storage - We recommend airing the room after burning a candle.
- Allow the wax to cool completely before moving your candle.
- Store it in a dry, temperate place (15 °C–25 °C / 59 °F–77 °F), away from direct sunlight to prevent the wax from discolouring, staining, or coming away from the glass.

When 5 mm of wax remain or the metal wick holder is visible, it's time to give your candle a second life.
Step 1
After the last use, it is recommended to let the candle cool down completely so that the wax solidifies and the glass returns to its normal temperature.
Step 2
To remove the wax:
- Place the candle in a heat-resistant bowl, itself placed in a sink
- Pour water at about 60°C up to halfway, making sure not to get any inside the candle
- Leave for two minutes before taking out the jar by holding it at the top
Step 3
The wax will then come off easily by sliding a rounded blade between the wax and the side of the glass. The jar can then be washed by hand with a non-abrasive sponge and La Droguerie washing-up liquid, or in the dishwasher.
Black marks can be removed once the candle is extinguished using a cloth soaked in hot soapy water or by using La Droguerie multi-purpose spray.
Make sure to not leave any moisture on the glass or the wax before relighting the candle.
